It was 1234 when the citizens of Gubbio, who to reach with their carriages to Senigallia, the nearest seaport, had to get through the Cesano Valley and spend the night in Pergola, decided to form an alliance with the city and fortify it. That is why the historical centre bears tracks of the XIII century Umbrian architecture: buildings have the typical \u201cdead man doors\u201d, peculiar, lancet arched narrow openings meant to let a coffin out, and in the meantime be defensible in case of invasion and pillage, rather frequent events at that time. Such was the of the economic importance guilds had in the city, that most emblematic boroughs of the city are still called Le Tinte (Dye-works) and Le Conce (Tanneries). Some buildings still keep such aspects of their ancient use as rooms meant for drying or canals for the flow of water. Back to the XIII Century goes a tale fixed in the tradition and the memory of the city. It tells that in a location called Monte Vecchio di Serra Sant\u2019Onda, close to the border with the city of Gubbio, where the martyrs Secondo, Agabito and Giustina were buried, in the years 1240 to 1261 a series of miraculous events occurred, such as oxen that knelt and refused to plough the fields. The grave of the saints was thus found, but a fierce hostility arose between the cities of Gubbio, Gualdo Tadino, Spoleto and Amelia, all claiming for themselves the relics of the martyrs. In order to appease the spirits, the Bishop of Gubbio had the remains loaded on a carriage pulled by oxen, with no driver; at the crossroad to the several cities, the animals had no hesitation, turned around and headed for Pergola, where they knelt in front of St. Augustine\u2019s, now the city Cathedral. And there the sacred remains of the saints are still carefully kept. Every year their prodigious arrival is remembered by a historical re-enactment. Pergola is also renown because of another historical event of national importance: it was the first town in Marche that rose against the papal government in 1860, during uprising for the unification of Italy, and that episode won it the Gold Medal for Risorgimento; it also was the first Italian city on whose city hall proudly waved the tricolour Italian flag.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
