The bells tolled regularly, in ancient hamlets, and diffused reassuring notes that marked the day at regular intervals. In Gradara two bells toll in two very different places, both tied to its sacred and profane history. In the Historic Museum, a miniature bell only vibrates when touched in the right place with a little coin. According to the tradition, if the toll comes then the visitor will get great luck. The bell is the last stage of the visit to a museum which retraces some of the most sadly typical practices of a time when violence was the first way to solve a dispute. Close to an exhibition of ancient weapons, which includes throwing machines and scale model catapults, there is also a collection of faithful reproductions of instruments of torture, which were used to extort confessions even from the most honourable knights, consisting of whips, picks, Procustes beds and pointed chastity belts. From the museum it is also possible to get to a section of the many caves cut into the Gradara subsoil. They were used as hideaways during the incessant battles, but also to celebrate pagan rites forbidden by the Church. And it is a very ancient church, St. John the Baptist\u2019s, lying beneath the Castle, that hosts the second bell, a normal one, which may be played by visitors, who can thus know how it feels being a sacristan. Inside the XIV century fa\u00e7ade, there is a beautiful wooden crucified Christ, whose face bears a peculiar prospective: moving right to left to three carefully marked position, at first it looks like the suffering Christ were speaking some words, then as if he was falling into a state of fatal agony, and finding at last a peaceful expression in the rest of death. Friar Innocenzo, who created this beautiful work, meant perhaps to allude, by sculpturing it in the wood, to the sacredness and the mystery of the Christian Trinity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
