When one looks towards the most elevated part of the city, his eyes linger on the vestiges of the ancient Malatestian Fortress, a surrounding wall built in the Twelfth Century by the Vatican State, restored in the Fifteenth Century by the Malatesta family and later reinforced by duke Federico da Montefeltro. Quadrangular in shape and with a tower at each corner, it was demolished in 1502 by Guidobaldo da Montefeltro \u201cwith a terrifying racket\u201d, as chroniclers of the time wrote, to prevent its falling in the hands of Caeser Borgia. In a by now multi-secular decadence, it still holds suggestive internal locations, tunnels and rooms
From the top of the hill where the Fortress lies, the breathtaking view can be seen where the city is set.
In Fossombrone the story of the Montefeltro from Urbino Family took place. It can be retraced, step after step, along Corso Garibaldi (Garibaldi Street), the only street in the Marche region which can boast a double portico, where a variety of shops and taverns once existed. Showing more suggestive corners, along the stairways that lead to the most elevated part of the city, the most important historical buildings of Fossombrone follow one another: St. Philip\u2019s, a splendid baroque church built between 1608 and 1613 as an ex voto by the citizens after the birth of a male heir to the last duke of Urbino. It was originally a simple and unpretentious structure, with one room only and no chapels. The Philippine Fathers did then enlarge and embellish it, to better glorify God. It was the famous sculptor Tommas Amantini from Urbania who created the stucco decorations; also evident is the mark of the local painter Francesco Guerreri in the altarpiece and other paintings in one of the chapels. The church, turned into a museum, can now be visited by those who wish to admire its splendid interior, characterized by the lavish series of stuccos and by the rich patrimony of paintings, sculptures, altar clothes and holy vessel. While walking along the street one has to stop to enjoy the beauty of such historical buildings as the Fourteenth-Century St. Augustin\u2019s, a church with the Malatesta\u2019s emblem, together with the one of the apothecaries\u2019 (a mortar and pestle), placed on the fa\u00e7ade, which is also remarkable because of its magnificent sandstone portal and the characteristic medieval cloister.
Then there are Palazzo Cattabeni, a Sixteenth-Century building with a typical ashlar-work fa\u00e7ade and lacunar ceilings; the sandstone City Hall, dating from the Seventeenth Century, the Episcopal palace, with its wide windows and the alternate tympanums. Finally, the Eighteenth-Century cathedral and the building where probably lived the painter Francesco Guerrieri, as is mentioned by an inscription. Fossombrone is also called \u201cthe city of the three courts\u201d. The High court is represented by the renaissance palace, built by the Montefeltro family, where today are hosted the Archaeological Museum and the Art Gallery. A remarkable high loggia is oriented east, and the massive west wing once hosted the ducal theatre. During the third decade of the Sixteenth Century, the Della Rovere family built the Low Court and the Red Court as additions to the High Court, a group of buildings connected to each other which is now concealed into the urban pattern. The still existing wooden roofs of the High Court characterize the rooms of the Civic Art Gallery, created in 1901. Here the centuries from the Sixteenth up to the Nineteenth come in succession: from a sketch representing the concession of stigmata to St. Francis by painter Federico Barocci, dating from the end of the Sixteenth Century, up to the Seventeenth- Century works by Francesco Guerrieri, who brought in Fossombrone Caravaggio\u2019s new approach to painting, and the portraits by Francesco Podesti. Before leaving Fossombrone, a visit to the Cesarini Museum and Art Gallery, named after the notary who lived in the building, is necessary.
Here one can not only have a glimpse of the intimacy of a typical bourgeois residence of the first half of the Twentieth Century, but also admire works by the local painter Anselmo Bucci, whom the notary greatly appreciated, and whose flair and inspiration can be admired in all rooms. Remarkable are a self portrait of the artist, who represents himself as a house painter, as if art was a matter of skill rather than inspiration, and the beautiful internal court of the villa, dug in the rock as if to make it one with the mountain side standing out on the back of the building.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
