Very much like on the mosaics on an ancient floor, on every corner of the city of Pesaro a tile can be found that contributes to build the image of its beauty. The face of the Sleeping Eros set into the cobblestones of the roads leads us up to the archaeological area of “Via dell’Abbondanza” (the road of abundance), where excavations revealed a Roman “domus” (mansion) dating from the imperial age. The subsoil of Pesaro is a doorway to the most ancient past, as is also witnessed by the findings in the Colombarone archaeological site, inside the San Bartolo Mountain green, where a rich villa from the III century, a basilica and a parish church were found. Care and love for culture find their full expression in the Civic Museums, located in Palazzo Mosca, which host such absolute masterpieces as the Crowning of the Virgin by Giovanni Bellini and the Fall of the Giants by Guido Reni, sided by a scenographic exposition of majolica adorned with the Rose of Pesaro. The art as a password, no matter how young; rather, with a privileged look at modern art virtuously intertwined with the past, as is shown by the presence of the “Centro Arti Visive Pescheria” (Pescheria Centre for Visual Arts), the most important centre for contemporary art in the whole Adriatic area, and by the St. Giovanni Library, one of the most beautiful in Italy, which joins the learned tradition of books and the most modern digital resources. A culture that crosses ages and borders, even the religious ones. Not far from the Cathedral, which raises above a wide double floor of wonderful mosaics, we find in fact the Sephardic Synagogue, by the high ceiling decorated with roses and oak branches the emblem of the Della Rovere family. The visit to the Hebraic culture continues in the St. Bartolo park, where the graveyard lies. Into the historic centre there is also Rocca Costanza (Constance Fortress), the first example of “level ground fortification” in Marche, which Costanzo Sforza had built between 1474 and 1483. In the summertime, the Rocca is the reference place for the live shows of the “Rocca Costanza Scena Aperta” (Constance Fortress open stage) festival.
