In the heart San Giorgio

Places of cult and culture

A short space along the main road, in the heart of the ancient castle of San Giorgio, hosts the most interesting places of the village. By one side of the road, the low profile of houses is interrupted by the façade and the tall bell tower of St. Spirit’s, the main church in San Giorgio, that belongs to the Brotherhood of the Most Saint Sacrament and of Rosary. The church was recently made larger than the previous structure, dating back to the XVIII century. The inside is now completely plastered and the white walls highlight its neoclassical architecture. The altars host paintings collected in the many little churches scattered in the territory, all by unknown local painters, probably from the school of Guerrieri, an important painter from Marche of the XVII century.
Across the road, nearby, in front of the Parish church, there is “Mina’s house”, named after its last owner, which is now the seat of “MuSA”, the Historical and Environmental Museum. It was conceived and set up with strong didactic characteristics and visitors get there after crossing the sensorial path created in the court garden. A variety of sections is meant to explain and exalt the tight link between the traditional activities and the faunal and floral components of the local environment. Visitors are welcomed by the sections dedicated to sericulture and apiculture, two activities historically important in San Giorgio. The instrument and the products on display bring back to life habits and skills of workers from a gone by time, whose inheritance is thus kept alive. The strong link with the environment is also shown by the imposing Taxidermal Collection, which includes more than 250 stuffed animals, mostly from the territory of the province. The collection of MuSA is completed by works of contemporary art, a library and a hall showing ancient city documents and the poems of Marino Saudelli, a local poet testifying the cultural content of vernacular verses which made San Giorgio gain the “Town of Dialect” title.
