Alogastronomy and much more: new words and ancient tastes

The city of beer, of truffles and of traditional recipes.

The fact that Apecchio had to create a new word shows how important its eno-gastronomy is and how many factors are connected to it. “Alogastronomy” is a neologism meant to include the idea of producing, tasting and matching beer and food, so turning the fair drink into a real connector. Beer flows in Apecchio like spring water does from Mount Nerone, water that is one of its fundamental ingredients, along with barley which around here grows strong and luxuriant. So very favourable a natural context stimulated the desire of creating refined and valued products. Many breweries were thus established, whose products got an enormous success: especially Tenute Collesi, Amarcord, Birrificio Venere and Beerfirm Mochimash. It’s no wonder that Apecchio, known as “City of the Beer” and the headquarters of the National Association City of the Beer, is by now a reference point to the whole Italy in this sector. And there is certainly no lack of delicacies to match the goblets. Apecchio is a sort of an enormous jewel box: one rummages the ground and finds truffles, jewels whose variety enriches the menu round the year. In order to pay homage to such abundance, the Trade Show of Truffle and Festival of Alogastronomy takes place in the roads of the city centre during the first week-end of October. Not less rich is the variety of mushrooms, the most renowned of which is St. George’s mushroom, here called “Spignolo”. Fine products, rich, most wanted. But Apecchio is also the city of traditions, the guardian of ancient and rural recipes. Those who come here cannot help tasting “Bostrengo”, a cake whose recipe is the same since a remote past, when it was called “the cupboard emptier” because to make it they used all ingredients left in the house, and is now produced and sold with the same care dedicated to the beer. Many other recipes, such as “Il salmì del prete” (the priest’s stewed) and the Coratella d’agnello (lamb innards) are tied to the city’s identity; they all are characterized by the quality of their ingredients and production, so that also in this case in Apecchio they invented a new expression, the “DE.C.O.” (Communal Denomination of Origin) aimed at conducting a census, giving value and promoting the local typical products, an inestimable asset to the city.
