Fano sea town

The beaches and the port: an up-to-date tradition

The marine undertow beats in the heart of Fano. The city is inextricably tied to the Adriatic sea which faces it majestically. The Port represents the very heart of this link with its commercial and touristic activity, an ancient heritage still alive in places where time appears to have stopped. The Lisippo Walk starts at Sassonia Beach; it is named after the statue by the homonymous Grecian sculptor that was found in these waters: a copy of that statue, placed at the touristic harbour of Marina dei Cesari, marks the end of the walk, along which one gets a glimpse both of the peculiarity of the port environment and of the extension of the sea. But it is along the Trabucco dock, marked by the stilt houses used by fishermen, or while visiting El Gugul neighbourhood, an emblem of those fishermen, that one relives the marine story of Fano. This place, whose name originates from a peculiar kind of fishing net, is a road where people know each other and everybody is known only by ironic nicknames, pronounced in the cryptic dialect only accessible to those who understand it since ancient times. Fishermen who live and lived here spent whole days in search of fish to feed themselves and their families. They lived real odysseys, which strengthened their body and theirs spirit, making them as chunky as docking ropes. With a little bit of luck, one can still hear their stories, told in front of a glass of Moretta wine or by the docks, by the very people who lived them. That tradition lives here, today, side by side with the advancement of progress that changed landscapes and the habits of people. Fano has excellent beaches, both sandy and gravelled. The Blue and Green Flags, along with the Sails granted by Legambiente (a leading association dedicated to the protection of the Italian natural environment) certify the quality of the water and of services offered at North Fano, Torrette and Sassonia beaches, all equipped to offer the best assistance to children and with spaces dedicated to their four-legged friends.
