On the orbit centred upon San Lorenzo in Campo lie two small boroughs, two lonely gems shining with their own light. Both reachable by means of roads which follow the ups and downs of the hills, these hamlets escaped the flow of time, lie peacefully on top of their hills and are an inescapable chance to get rid of the dross created by the frantic everyday life. Here peace and stillness materialized into the great city walls which the visitor feels like would protect and hug him, enabling him to take slow, deep breaths and admire the divine surrounding landscape. This is made possible by a walk around the city walls of Montalfoglio, a small cozy place dressed with stones. After each turn, one can see new views, where the horizon is designed by the sinuous shape of the hills and by the sudden rise of the mountains. After ascending a short ramp that replaces the ancient drawbridge, one enters in Montalfoglio by crossing the double arch under the clock tower. It is a postcard-like image, but images can only partly render the emotion of being here. As the visitor walks here, he can hear the sound of silence, his thoughts get less frantic, his body relaxes. St. Martin’s parish church, with its large amazing façade, is in the meantime austere and maternal. The same emotions can be lived in San Vito sul Cesano, the other borough of San Lorenzo in Campo. Rising on top of a hill that dominates the valley of the Cesano River, this hamlet is still surrounded by the walls that protected it during the battles that marked the changes of dominations it went through during the Middle Ages. Here there are two remarkable religious buildings: the church dedicated to the saints Biagio and Esuperanzio shows a rich baroque style and is adorned with precious frescoes and, in the outskirts of the hamlet, the Old Monumental Parish Church, dating back to the year 1000 and bearing a great historical importance.
