The elegance of the Theatre in San Lorenzo in Campo is more than an architectural product: it is imprinted into its history. In fact, this magnificent jewel was built into the piano nobile of the della Rovere Building, where the members of the powerful family were used to organizing dancing soirées. The echo of those elegant renaissance holidays still resounds in the theatre because of its charms. Originally a wooden and removable one, the French way, the theatre was subsequently transformed, the Italian way, and consists, in addition to the parterre, of two lines of daises and a gallery. It is enriched most of all by the liberty decorations that fill the hall: the glazed entrance doors, portraying the faces of two charming girls, and the walls, up to the beautiful ceiling. All around him the visitor sees floral motives, spirals, puffs, little angels, mythological characters and images of an idyllic and dreamlike environment, painted with soft colours that caress his gaze. the theatre, after his death, was dedicated to Mario Tiberini, a great tenor who was born in San Lorenzo in Campo in 1826. Very admired by his contemporaries, Tiberini sang with great success in theatres all around the world. This theatre, completed in 1816 and known, at first, as “Teatro del Trionfo” (Theatre of Triumph), went through closures, restorations and different utilisations, but since the beginning of the Eighties in the XX century it is the protagonist of the local cultural life and offers a rich opera and prose season. With the aim both of honouring the most famous opera singers and of promoting new voices, since thirty years now the Tiberini International Lyric Prize was created: a chance to bring prestige to San Lorenzo in campo inviting here illustrious guests and to keep alive the glory of the theatre and the memory of great Mario Tiberini.
